Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection - A Personal Investment

In the Gospel for this weekend the Lord puts before us an important truth about our human nature: when it comes to our relationship to God and to money, we can only have one master. We will either love the first and hate the second or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. This is because one love casts out the other.

The love of God purifies us of the love of money and the love of money causes us to diminish in our love of God. The human heart is created to be conquered by love and if we do not allow ourselves to be conquered by the love of God then we leave ourselves open to be conquered by the love of something else such as money. When this happens then we begin to slip into slavery and we will act with less and less freedom. But when the love of God is primary in our lives, when we submit in humility to His will, then, we enter into true and lasting freedom.

This is the paradox at the core of our faith; it is only in making the gift of our will, our freedom, our hearts, and our lives to God that we actually come to experience authentic liberty. In becoming the ‘slave of God’ we are made free.
