Sunday 14th October 2007

Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection

The story of the ten lepers in this Sunday’s Gospel has a very obvious lesson, namely, the importance of showing gratitude. But it has another lesson and that is finding God through pain. Pain can drive people away from God, or it can bring them close to God. If this brings us closer to God, and makes us more spiritual, it will prove to be a blessing in disguise. It seems that of the ten lepers only one of them was brought closer to God through his illness and recovery. The willingness to give something back is a great sign of gratitude. There isn’t room for bitterness or resentment. All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy.
